A Powerful Partnership to Improve Funding for Environmental Endeavors

According to Giving USA, Americans’ charitable contributions toward environmental causes reached just 3% of overall charitable donations in 2021. Amidst our current climate crisis, as well as the numerous other environmental emergencies before us, this number can’t promote the type of action we need to ensure the health and longevity of our planet.

We know it’s needed. In fact, statistics show that most of us are on board with measures to mitigate climate change.

  • 69% of Americans support endeavors to make the U.S. carbon neutral by 2050
  • 2/3 of Americans believe the federal government should encourage domestic production of wind and solar energy through incentives
  • 61% say that climate change is affecting their community

Closely tied to climate change, other pressing environmental concerns include:

  • Creating sustainable food systems
  • Land management and forest conservation
  • Pollution prevention
  • Preserving and restoring water quality
  • Protecting wildlife and biodiversity

So, what’s holding us back? If so many Americans agree these are issues that should be tackled, why aren’t they willing to contribute to the cause?

Dampers on Donating

It seems there are several issues when it comes to choosing to contribute to our planet’s pressing environmental issues.

First off, it’s difficult to pinpoint the biggest contributor to climate change and, therefore, hard to decide where we want our funds used. For example, in the U.S., transportation is labeled the biggest culprit to greenhouse gas emissions; however, on a global scale, industry is to blame. Agriculture, land use, electricity, and landfills are also significant contributors. Without definitive knowledge of the root cause, many people find it hard to feel their money makes a difference.

Another reason is the lack of marketing for monetary contributions. It’s clear we should shop sustainably, and we know how to do our part personally in ways like conserving water or electricity, reducing our use of plastics, recycling, and composting, yet we aren’t always informed on how funds can make a direct impact on environmental causes.

It’s also common to feel that accurate information about environmental issues is hard to find and difficult to digest. Reports, surveys, and scientific studies aren’t always written with the average consumer in mind.

Do You Want to Do More?

Besides your eco-friendly household habits, including your purchase of 100% bamboo toilet paper from HeyBamboo, you can make a difference in an environmental cause by contributing to a worthy organization.

If doing your part to help the planet includes monetary donations, it’s a good idea to be well-informed about what that organization offers.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when choosing an environmental organization to support:

1. Narrow down your desired area of impact. Is there a specific environmental aspect that appeals to you most?

2. Do your research. Make sure the organization aligns with your values and has a reputation for upholding principles you find admirable.

2. Consider the impact. Look for groups making a real difference in the world. They should have a clear plan based on analysis and evidence of need and action steps for how they will use your donation to create change.

3. Get involved. See if the organization offers ways for you to volunteer or participate in their work. This can be a great way to deepen your connection to the cause and feel more invested in its success.

What About 1%?

There’s a notion that businesses should give back to the environment, and that number should be at least 1% of profits. Thanks to two eco-conscious business owners, it’s becoming the mantra of many corporations, brands, and entrepreneurs worldwide.

The idea began in 2002 when the founder of Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard, and Blue Ribbon Flies founder Craig Mathews joined forces. Bound by their mutual love and respect for the outdoors, the two decided together to give 1% of their sales back to the environment, even if that meant forfeiting a profit. Soon, they weren’t the only ones adopting the 1% mentality.

One by one, brands across the globe began to recognize their responsibility to the planet and started subscribing to 1% for the Planet’s core belief: businesses profit from resources they take from the earth, so businesses should work to protect those resources.

At HeyBamboo, we couldn’t agree more, and we’re on board to help!

Partnering with 1% for the Planet as a business means helping to address one of their four major impact areas:
